Frequently Asked Questions about Procedures

Medical Microdermabrasion (Parisian Peel)

How does it work?
Very fine, sterile crystals are sprayed across the surface of the skin removing the outer layers of dead skin cells. The dead skin cells and crystals are then vacuumed through a small opening located in the hand piece. Dead skin cells cause the skin to look dull. Age and sun damage are the biggest contributing factors. It's like the outer layer of your skin is virtually being sandblasted, and a new layer is uncovered.

What areas can be treated?
The procedure is typically for the face, neck and decollete but can be used on the hands and body.

How long does the procedure take?
It depends on the area being treated. Typically, the procedure requires 30 minutes for the face, neck and decollete, but may require more time depending on the other areas needed.

Is it painful? Typically, the procedure is gentle and in some cases comfortable, yet this may vary depending on the individual and area being treated.

Is it safe?
While all procedure's have potential for harm, Microdermabrasion is safe.

How many treatments are required?
Treatments are provided in a series of sessions for maximum results. Usually six to eight are required. Most clients will see and feel a difference after the very first treatment.

What results can I expect?
The result is an overall improvement in skin tone. Acne scars are smoothed and less visible; Enlarged pores are refined and minimized, while smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. Keloid scars and stretch marks also show improvement with Microdermabrasion treatments.

Can Microdermabrasion be combined with other treatments?
Microdermabrasion is beneficial alone or can be combined with other procedures for an even deeper peel with faster results. Your doctor can discuss the various options appropriate for you and how well your skin will tolerate such treatments.

Is it permanent?
To maintain the results, maintenance sessions are recommended about once or twice every month.

Are there any side effects?
Side affects are not generally a factor, although you may feel a slight sunburn affect that will subside in a few hours.

Can I still wear makeup?
It is not recommended for individuals with clogged pores and/or acne, as your pores have just been cleaned out. However a mineral based powder is recommended. More mature skin may apply makeup following the treatment.

Permanent Hair Reduction (MeDioStar XT)

How does hair reduction work?
A pulse of laser light penetrates the skin and delivers energy which destroys the hair root while sparing the surrounding skin.

What areas can be treated?
All areas of the body can be treated, except around the eyes.

How long does the procedure take?
It depends on the area being treated. It will typically take 15 minutes to treat the underarms and up to an hour for legs.

Is it painful?
Anesthesia is not required. The only effect felt is a hot and tingling sensation which is easily tolerated.

Is it safe?
Complications are rare. In less than 1% of cases, skin lightning or darkening may occur. You must wear a sun block no less than 40 SPF during the months following laser treatment.

How many treatments will I require?
Because hair grows in multiple cycles, several treatments are necessary depending on type of hair and location. Treatments are usually performed four to six weeks apart.

What results can I expect?
Clinical studies have demonstrated a permanent reduction in hair numbers after each treatment. 80% reduction should be achieved.

Is it permanent?
Yes. After each treatment, the hair that re-grows is thinner, lighter and less numerous.

Are there any side effects?
Side effects are minimal and are generally limited to a slight redness of the skin which should not persist for more than a few hours.

Can I still wear make-up?
Yes, makeup can be applied immediately after the procedure. Mineral makeup is recommended. If you carry it, this is a good time to offer a quick make-over.

Intense Pulsed Light or IPL (Prolite II) and Photo facial

How does it work?
The intense pulsed light emits wavelengths that are absorbed by vascular and pigmented lesions in multiple levels of the skin. When the broad band light is absorbed by melanin (brown spots) and oxyhemoglobin (veins /red spots), the lesions are gently heated and destroyed.

What areas can be treated?
The IPL procedure can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, and shoulders.

How long does the procedure take?
It depends on the area being treated. It typically takes 20 minutes to treat the entire face.

Is it painful?
Anesthesia is not required for the IPL treatment and is well tolerated. Some compare the sensation to a warm rubber band snap.

Is it safe?
Complications are rare. In less than 1% of cases, skin lightning or darkening may occur. Sun block of SPF 40 or higher must be used in the month following the IPL treatment.

How many treatments are required?
It is recommended to have a series of four to six treatments in two to four week intervals. Single maintenance treatments (every 6 months) help to retain optimal results.

What results can I expect?
Visible signs of aging and sun damage will be significantly reduced. There is an overall improvement in skin texture and tone.

Is it permanent?
Yes, but skin continues to age with time. A good skincare routine will help slow the appearance of aging skin and sun damage.

Are there any side effects?
The vascular and pigmented lesions will be darker in appearance for 5 to 7 days.

Can I still wear makeup?
Makeup can be applied 24 hours after the IPL treatment.

Redness (flushing and Rosacea)
  1. Superficial redness is generally due to genetic predisposition but these symptoms become increasingly visible with aging.
  2. This superficial redness can safely and efficaciously greatly be improved using the Prolite, a light device that specifically targets these superficial blood vessels in the skin. The light will harmlessly travel through your skin and selectively target the red areas.
  3. The vessels will take a darker, angrier look that may persist for 24 hours. They will then start to fade and will continue to do so for up to 2 weeks.
  4. Each treatment will improve the general look of your skin. A series of 4 treatments is recommended, typically at 3 weeks' intervals.
  5. The treatment should also assist in evening out any pigment irregularities (sun damage, etc...).
  6. There is no typical number of treatments as each patient responds differently. The only thing that we can commit to is that the redness in your skin will decrease with each treatment. Typically, an initial series of 4 treatments will yield good results, although more treatments may well be required. After this initial course of treatments, we will evaluate how many more treatments may be required, if any.
  7. Type I skin rejuvenation involves minimal discomfort:
  8. The sensation is that of a rubber band being snapped against your skin. Some patients also report a feeling of warmth. This is only temporary.
  9. After the treatment a mild, tingling sensation may also be felt that can last for up to a few hours after the treatment.
  10. Topical anesthesia may be used to improve patient comfort.
  11. Discomfort improves with each treatment as there are fewer targets to be removed.
  12. Immediately after the procedure, a sun block no less than 40 must be applied. Normal activities can be resumed immediately. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 24 hours. Hot showers/ baths should be avoided for 24 hours after the procedure.
  13. Although the results achieved are permanent, more pigment will appear as a result of sun exposure. Over the years, further maintenance treatments may be necessary, typically a single treatment every 6 months.

What precautions should I take before or after my laser, IPL and Microdermabrasion treatments?
In general, avoid sun exposure for 4-6 weeks before treatment, and again after treatment until your physician allows it. Care should be taken in the first few days following treatments to avoid scrubbing or rinsing the treated area with abrasive skin cleansers. Consult your practitioner for specific precautions that relate to your individualized treatment plan.

Are there any adverse side-effects to laser or light-based treatments?
In general, most procedures have a low risk of adverse side effects. Some patients experience pigment changes in the skin. If this occurs, the skin will typically return to normal pigmentation over time. All treatment results have individual variation. In general the side-effects relate to skin type, area treated, sun exposure, and certain light sensitive medication. Discuss with your practitioner regarding details.
